New Year’s Resolutions
Ok, ok….it’s the second week of the New Year. And by now a lot of folks out there are diving deep into their New Years’ Resolutions. Especially following that ten months of quarantine!
My sister and I occasionally joke about the “Quarantine 19.” I only wish we were actually joking. LOL. Well, Shisler’s Cheesehouse is not just all about the candy and cookies and cheese and meats. Well, not ALL about those scrumptious treats 🙂 We also offer plenty of skinny alternatives to satisfy your snack cravings while sticking to your resolves!
First, I want to start with some GREAT news…Did you know that of all the cheeses in the world, Swiss is by far one of the healthiest?
Yup. Each piece of Swiss cheese is packed with protein, calcium and Vitamin B-12. And, it’s on the lower end of the fat and sodium spectrum of the “cheese wheel.” Pun intended.
Lucky for you, we have a ton of amazing, locally made Swiss cheeses available to help you satisfy your cheese cravings in a more healthy way. The obvious choice is the favorite Guggisberg Baby Swiss. But for a bit more variety, try the Lacey Swiss as well!
We also carry a variety of Yogurt Cheeses that is also low in calories, sodium and fat. Yogurt Cheese still offers the same creamy goodness as regular cheese, but its own mild flavor takes on the tastes of whatever it is mixed with! We offer Veggie, Garlic & Herb or Jalapeno varieties of this unique and guilt free treat!
Have a sweet tooth that always needs satisfaction? Try swapping out sugar or artificial sweeteners with Tom’s Pure Clover Honey.
I like to substitute honey for sugar in my morning coffee or swap out the brown sugar in a lot of baked goods. Drizzle it over some peanut butter and bananas on whole wheat toast for a protein packed and healthy breakfast treat or snack. Make a parfait with fresh fruit, nuts and greek yogurt and top it with some honey to accentuate the natural sweetness.
The benefits of honey as a sugar substitute are endless, but I’ll start with these:
- Honey is the only food that never spoils.
- Honey is the only food produced by insects that humans eat.
- Honey is naturally fat-free as well as cholesterol free.
- Honey is nature’s energy booster.
- Honey is a great immunity builder.
- Honey is 25% sweeter than table sugar.
- Honey is the only food that includes all of the substances necessary to sustain life including enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and water. It is the only food that contains “pinocembrin” , an antioxidant associated with improved brain function.
If you find yourself constantly in need of a salty snack, grab some roasted peas, wasabi peas or a sweet and salty trail mix. Swapping out the Chex Mix or potato chips for any of these highly snackable, healthy alternatives will be sure to keep your hips, and you heart, much happier!
